Got Knee Pain?
Don't Let Knee Pain ✋Stop You...

Here at Well Beings Medicine, we understand how debilitating chronic knee pain can be.

If you’re suffering from painful or achy knees, – it’s very easy to think that it’s “just something that comes with age”, it’s a bit of “wear and tear”, or that it’s nothing and it’ll go away on its own.

You may have tried stretching, resting, heat, ice, maybe even just pushing through it – but it doesn’t seem to be getting any better!

If you are experiencing this type of knee pain, you’re not alone – we hear this type of thing all the time. In fact, Knee Pain is one of THE most common problems that we see in our Wheat Ridge physical medicine clinic.

When presented with invasive and expensive options, such as knee replacement surgery and continual use of pain medications, it seems like there are no good, nor long-term solutions for your knee pain relief.

What Really is Knee Pain?

As one of the strongest and most complex joints in your body, your knees handle a considerable amount of strain, stress and wear and tear every day.

Not only do they hold your full body weight every time you take a step, but they also support 5x greater load every time you jog, jump or even go up stairs.

Regardless of the cause, whether from an accident, a new or old injury from years ago, or unknow reasons, all knee pain can lead to increased friction which creates continual wear-and-tear on the knee. This causes inflammation and swelling which can create more damage. This is called knee arthritis (knee joint inflammation). Over time, knee arthritis causes breakdown in that joint.

The first step is to pinpoint the exact mechanism of why your knee pain is occurring by evaluating your knee, its function, then develop a blueprint of exactly what has happened and the degree of damage.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

There are many potential causes of knee pain. A proper diagnosis is crucial to ensuring you receive the most effective treatment for your condition.

  • Acute Knee Injury: On any given day, especially if you’re active, your knee is constantly working as you move forward, backward, and side to side. It also functions when you stop, turn, rotate, and jump. Any one of these movements can cause an acute or sudden injury. The most common acute knee injuries are:
    • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear
    • Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) tear
    • Torn Meniscus
    • Bursitis
    • Dislocation
    • Fracture
  • Degeneration: this is arthritis from wear-and-tear, also known as osteoarthritis.  Osteoarthritis in its many different forms, can cause a lot of knee pain as your joint is robbed of lubrication and cushion and your cartilage breaks down, causing painful and continual swelling. At Well Beings Medicine we call this ‘Creaky Knee Syndrome’ and we are knee pain treatment specialist in Wheat Ridge and West Denver, CO.
  • Ligament Tears:  ligaments attach bones to bones and therefore when torn can cause significant joint instability. This instability leads to further wear and tear, or osteoarthritis, when it becomes chronic.
  • Medial Collateral Ligament sprain or MCL injury – The MCL is a ligament tear on the inside of the knee caused by twisting motion or direct impact.
  • Lateral Collateral Ligament sprain or LCL injury – The LCL is a ligament tear on the outside of the knee also caused by twisting motion or direct impact.

  • Meniscal (Cartilage) Tears – The medial and lateral meniscus acts as two cushions between the two big bones of your knee join. Damage or a torn meniscus can be caused by contact sports. You can also suffer from a torn meniscus as a part of chronic knee arthritis.
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament injuries (ACL) – A rapid change in direction or an improper landing on a jump may cause ACL tears. This is the most common sports injury.
  • Posterior Cruciate Ligament injuries (PCL) – A blow to the front of the knee while the knee is bent may cause PCL tears. This injury can be seen in motor vehicle accidents.
  • Knee Bursitis – The bursa providing cushioning to your knee . The bursa can fill with fluid and become swollen from repetitive movements, causing redness and sensitivity. It can also be damaged from trauma associated with a fall, or with excessive time kneeling.
  • Knee Tendonitis – The tendons in your knee can become damaged from overuse. “Patellar tendonitis” is the most common. This will cause pain along the front of your knee.

FAQs About Knee Pain

Pain in or around the knee that may indicate a condition affecting the knee joint itself or the soft tissue around the knee. Serious problems may exist if you have symptoms such as swelling, joint stiffness, cracking joints, inability to bear weight on your knee (or it feels unstable), and/or the inability to fully extend or flex your knee.
According to the latest from John Hopkins Medicine, the most common causes of knee pain today are related to aging (osteoarthritis), injury/accident or repeated stress on the knee. Common knee problems include sprained or strained ligaments, cartilage tears, tendonitis and arthritis.
If you are a candidate for the Well Beings Knee Recovery Program, most patients feel relief beginning after the first few treatments. After the first stage of your program, the majority of patients feel dramatic relief and have returned to regular activities, including stairs, walking/jogging, and more natural knee motions.

The short answer if our treatment affects knee bursitis is: yes!
Knee bursitis is a condition that occurs when the small, fluid-filled sacs called bursae become inflamed. These sacs act as cushions between the knee bones, tendons, and muscles around the knee joint, helping to reduce friction during movement. Specifically in the knee, several bursae aid in smooth joint motion, but when one or more of these sacs become irritated or inflamed, it can lead to discomfort, swelling, and limited mobility. Factors contributing to knee bursitis may include repetitive stress, direct trauma to the knee joint, or an underlying condition like knee arthritis or gout. Bursitis can affect anyone but is more common among athletes, individuals who engage in repetitive kneeling, and those with a history of joint issues.

Conservative approaches to treat bursitis and the affected joint aims to reduce the inflamed bursa, relieve pain, and restore normal function in the affected area. The initial approach typically involves the RICE protocol (rest, ice, compression, and elevation), which helps alleviate swelling and discomfort. Our physical medicine protocols and therapy exercises can strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee, improving joint stability and promoting a faster recovery, all while reducing bursitis pain. To prevent bursitis from recurring, it’s crucial to identify and address the underlying causes, such as modifying activities that place excessive stress on the knee, using proper protective gear during sports, and maintaining a healthy body weight to reduce pressure on the joints.

With knee arthritis, the knee joint may become stiff and swollen, making it difficult to bend and straighten the knee. Pain and swelling may be worse in the morning, or after sitting or resting. Vigorous activity may cause pain to flare up and can also produce inflammation or swelling.

Because every individual that comes to Well Beings Integrative Medicine is different, our Accelerated Joint Recovery Protocol is personalized for each patient.

Our team of healthcare providers have decades of experience and deploy a protocol pulling from nearly a dozen proven treatment modalities.

The aim of the Accelerated Joint Recovery Protocol is to restore function, increase the health of the tissues and joints, decreasing pain, while being back functionality.

We want to see you living an active life!

A torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury happens when the ACL in your knee gets damaged or torn (‘ACL tear’). The ACL is a strong band of tissue that connects your thigh bone (femur) to your shinbone (tibia) and helps keep your knee stable when you move. When this ligament gets torn (ACL injury), it can cause a lot of pain and make it hard to move your knee.

Some common causes of a torn ACL include playing sports (ex: football tackle) or doing activities that involve sudden stops, quick changes in direction, or jumping and landing. Sports like basketball, soccer, and football have a higher risk of ACL injuries because they involve these types of movements. Accidents, like falling or getting hit in the knee, can also cause a torn ACL.

There are a few symptoms or warning signs that might suggest someone has torn their ACL. These can include:

  • A “pop” sound or feeling: When the ACL tears, some people might hear or feel a popping sensation in their knee.
  • Pain: An ACL injury can cause severe pain in the knee, making it hard to walk or put weight on the injured leg.
  • Swelling: The knee injury might swell up quickly after the ACL injury. This swelling can be a sign that something is wrong inside the knee joint.
  • Instability: If the knee joint feels wobbly or like it’s giving out when you try to stand or walk, it might be a sign of a torn ACL.

If you think you or someone else has a torn ACL, it’s important to get it checked out right away.

Why put yourself through surgery if it can be avoided. Knee replacement surgery can be very expensive and reports of the total cost of this procedure vary with the hospital, physician and demographic region of the country. Most major insurance companies including Medicare cover knee replacements. According to the published statistics, the average cost of a knee replacement exceeds $45,000.

The pain management experts at Well Beings Integrative Medicine specialize in the treatment of chronic knee pain and osteoarthritis and offer an innovative non-surgical knee pain relief program that can relieve your discomfort and restore joint function and motion.
